Remember this whole thread where I talked about how George Perez is the best guy? Well, it gets BETTER.

I wrote him to make 100% sure he was okay with me doing this.

He wrote back.

First, he said that he supported the idea without reservation.

Then he said, "That said, I would like to make a proposition of my own.

"What If the new buyer of the piece was me? I’m really not sure as to how much a piece of my art would go for these days...but I would gladly pay $X for that would go for the cause, and then, as the new owner of the art, I’d like to re-gift it to you."

NIAGARA FALLS.

I told him I couldn't do that, but thank you so much. That I feel like this is the right thing, and he says, "As you wish," from my favorite movie.

So a little bit LATER, I get a new email from George.

"I see that the wonderfully awesome Colleen Doran has volunteered to do a sketch to be included with the WE art page.

With two of my favorite Diana boosters involved here, how can I not participate. Please put me in for a sketch as well. Perhaps one of Diana with Phillipus?"

Then he adds, "Sound good to you?"

WHY YES, THAT SOUNDS VERY GOOD TO ME MR. GEORGE PEREZ.

So let's take a new inventory. :)

Here is a true thing. When the great @perezartist was asked to do a 'farewell' Wonder Woman story for a DC WW anniversary issue.  He said, this guy who completely reinvented Wonder Woman and made her the awesome heroine she is today that he would "only do it if Gail Simone writes the story."  I don't know why he did it, other than just being generally awesome.  But he was already my hero for reinventing so many of my favorite characters, for his brilliant art and storytelling, and generosity.

So, I get the call, and it's one of the few times I ever just stopped and panicked a little.   It was..."Wait. It's George PEREZ drawing? And it's his FINAL Wonder Woman story? And he wants ME to write it? What? What's happening?"

But I jumped at it, obviously, and because it's Perez, I wrote pages with twelve panels and a million female characters, stuff I would NEVER ask any other artist, right? And the pages come back, and because it's Perez, he's added MORE panels and MORE characters, and it's incredible and I cry a little bit, because the story is George Perez saying goodbye, and his run had meant so much to me, and I got to write his last WW story.

A few weeks later, I get a mysterious package, and it's a bunch of pages of the original art. George just sent me a bunch of the art.  Never even mentioned he was going to do it. Imagine opening your mail and there's four pages of Perez art from his last WW story. So I had it all framed, and it's in the hallway to my office, so that it's the very first thing I see when I come to work each day.

Every day, no matter my mood, the first thing I see when I unlock the door, is Diana and Julia and how can you ever be sad after that?  So I try to put some good out into the industry every day in some small way, to somebody.

Because man, George Perez, right?

Her Former Glory

Unexpectedly, there is a strange history of Wonder Woman’s publication that emerges with the magnificent, fully formed Wonder Woman #600.Not a chronology mind you, a genealogy of the character in print. Thelandmark issue runs its course over five short stories, the final ofwhich being prologue to the new creative direction taken by seriesregular, J. Michael Straczynski. These stories are themselvesinterspersed with posters drawn by an array of artists, specificallycommissioned for this anniversary issue. And the entire issue isintroduced by a brief essay written by Lynda Carter, the actor whoplayed the character in the groundbreaking TV show.

But between the short stories and the posters a clear storyemerges—the history of Wonder Woman’s treatment at the hands of hercreatives. For openers, Gail Simone pens a George Perez-illustratedshort called ‘Valedictorian’. Perez is a veteran artist with alongstanding connection to the character. Another DC veteran is LouiseSimonson, who later in the book, in ‘Firepower’, unfolds a tale ofcivil disaster (planes being forced to crash) at the hands of mythicalhorse-thief. Closing off the book is incoming series regular writer JMichael Straczynski’s ‘Couture Shock’, with artist Don Kramershowcasing Jim Lee’s redesign of the Wonder Woman costume.

Confessions of a Comic Book Guy--The Power of Pants

Confessions of a Comic Book Guy is a weekly column by Steve Bennett of Super-Fly Comics and Games in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  This week, Bennett looks at the new Wonder Woman.

First a correction then an apology;in last week's column I called "The Iron Curtain Caper," a 13 page story featuring Archie Andrews foreign correspondent cousin Andrew a well done "imitation" of a 50's Archie story.  I knew the publisher claimed it was recently found in their archives but I assumed (like when Marvel insisted The Sentry was a"lost" character) this was so much ballyhoo.  But Rik Offen berger,Public Relations Coordinator for Archie Comics emailed to inform me that to the best of their knowledge the story really was drawn in the1950's.  I apologize to him, Archie Comics and you for spreading in correct information; once more I have proven to be too smart for my own good.

DC Unleashes New Printings of Five Sold-Out Hits, including Wonder Woman #600

As her new costume designed by DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Leehas garnered historic, international media coverage, it's no wonderthat the spectacular anniversary issue Wonder Woman #600 has sold out and is going back to press for a new, second printing.

Featuring the debut of the Amazon Warrior's new costume and the first story by new series writer J. Michael Straczynski, Wonder Woman #600 Second Printing (MAY108116)features a new cover by the new series' art team of Don Kramer andMichael Babinski. It is scheduled to arrive in stores on July 28.

Collectors should keep an eye out for the Wonder Woman #600 "DC 75th Anniversary" Variant Edition and the Wonder Woman #600 "DC 75th Anniversary" Black and White Variant Edition, both featuring a cover by Adam Hughes.

DC has also just announced the following reprints which will arrive in comic stores July 28...

What?

George Perez what?

He wants WHO to write it?

I’ve had some amazing experiences as a writer in the time I’ve beenat DC Comics, but every comic writer will tell you there’re few thingsas thrilling as working with an artist you’ve adored for years. Everyassignment is special and important, but writing JLA for Jose GarciaLopez, writing Superman for John Byrne, or writing a Black Canary storyfor Michael Golden, well, those are moments a writer lives for.

But this is Wonder Woman, and this is George Perez.

It's now clear that George Perez, not only provided the regular cover,but also does interior artwork. This also mean that Adam Hughes variant and B&W variant needs to be included in the Wonder Woman checklist.

The results are in!

The response to our call for Wonder Woman postcards was spectacular,and we got the message loud and clear. We asked for 600 and by the Oct31st cut off, we had an overwhelming 712 postcards (nearly 800 by thetime of this writing), so as a man of my word, starting in June 2010,DC’s Wonder Woman series will celebrate its 600th issue and continue onfrom there. And we promise that Diana’s anniversary issue will be oneto remember! There are some big plans in place and big changes in storefor our favorite amazon warrior, so keep an eye on The Source in the new year, because we will be breaking the news here first!
